Personal Injuries

Bruised Toe Nails
On my first and fourth walks I got bruised (black) toe nails.  The first time was because my shoes were too small (US 11).  They were okay for short journeys but for long bush walks I needed extra toe room so I moved up to size US 12.  The second time I was trialling softer shoe inserts and two pairs of socks.  There are two possible reasons why I bruised this time:
  1. The inserts and socks took up too much room and I again needed larger shoes.
  2. The new gel inserts and my walking motion were behaving like a pump and pumping blood into my toes.

Sore and Inflamed Knees
This is basically caused by the onset of arthritis. I'm managing this with the following:
  • Joint and lubricant supplements;
  • Gym work like leg presses and lunges;
  • Oral Anti-inflammatory.

Rolled Ankles
So far I've ripped my foot tendons in a minor way about 3 times. Twice on top of the foot and once on the outer side.  I've resisted strapping my ankles and am relying on my ankles getting stronger and my walking getting more aware.  This seems to be happening as there were no tears on the last five day trial and I would of half rolled ankles in the order of 70 times during these days.

Hyperthermia
During my 5th trial walk I learnt the painful lesson that Gore-Tex like fabrics are not water proof when you're in a thunder stormed and carrying a backpack. So I now use a poncho.  Ponchos are great :-)

Cramps
On my first trial walk I became immobilised with cramps so I now overdose on electrolytes.  The citric electrolytes are now burning my tongue so I now need to trial various electrolytes and cut back again.

Bruised Balls of My Feet
My feet are now getting tougher from the trial walks but on my next walk I hope to trial the shoes that incorporates a stone plate.

Foot Swelling (Thrombosis)
Every hour or two I lie on my back and put my feet up in the air to drain the blood out of my feet.

Blisters
I used Fixamol and a needle to manage my one and only blister. I might buy a scalpel in case I get deeper blisters.
